Dr Maurice Manning and the Expert Advisory Group on commemorations will host a public consultation meeting in the Royal College of Surgeons, St Stephen’s Green, on Monday 28 April 2014, from 1730 hrs.
The meeting is intended to showcase the variety of projects being undertaken by the state as part of the Decade of Centenaries, and will include presentations from the Military Service Pensions Archive, RTE Century Ireland, History Ireland. A variety of recent and forthcoming publications relating to the period will also be on display, and Dr Maurice Manning will discuss the role of the Expert Advisory Group.
Representatives of any groups engaged in commemorating any of the significant events of the period 1912 to 1922 are encouraged to attend to discuss their plans and proposals for the period, and to give their views on how the State can best commemorate the Easter Rising on its centenary in 2016.
The Military Heritage of Ireland Trust (CLG) will be represented at this consultation meeting.
This series of public consultations has been hosted by Dr Manning and members of the Expert Advisory Group on Commemorations in locations around Ireland. To date, meetings have been held in Carlow, Thurles, Cork and Kerry, with more to follow. The intention is that similar consultations will have been delivered across the country by 2016. The purpose of the meetings is for the Expert Advisory Group to become aware of initiatives being brought forward by local authorities and community and voluntary groups, and to stimulate discussion, encourage co-operation, and identify key issues.
Meetings so far have been well attended by many groups active in commemorations, and have generated considerable momentum for forthcoming commemorative initiatives.
