The Old Athlone Society

The Old Athlone Society to mark the 90th anniversary of its end is holding a conference on the War of Independence in the Midlands.

Available here is the application form for the conference which will be held on Saturday 26th November in Custume Barracks, Athlone.

Places are limited to 100 which is the capacity of the auditorium.

There is a good train and bus service to Athlone the timetables can be accessed on www.irishrail.ie and www.buseireann.ie I would be much obliged if you could circulate to the members of your organisation.

My Museum: Living History - Galloglasses and Buannachts

See history come alive with re-enactors David Swift and Marcus Seóighe . Watch a sword-fighting demonstration and take a close look at arms, armour and clothing of soldiers in late 16th-century Ireland.

Places allocated on a first-come basis from one hour before event starts.

 

Friday 28th October
(12.30-1pm: Adults)

Curator's Tour: Documents of the Easter Rising in the collection of the National Museum.

Curator Sandra Heise will give the inside story on the Museum's collection of documents relating to the 1916 Rising. This will include the Irish Proclamation of Independence, surrender notes and last letters of participants.

(12.30-1pm: Adults)

Curator's Tour: 11 November 1918

This day marks the end of World War One. Approximately 200,000 Irish soldiers fought in the war, and more than 35,000 died in battle. Join curator Lar Joye to hear about some of their stories.

Places allocated on a first-come basis from 15 minutes before event starts.

 

Saturday 12th November

Special Day of Events: Ireland and World War One

Events exploring Ireland's role in World War One, including talks, an historical re-enactment and a session with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers Association.
