SUMMARY:Cormac Moore – Ireland in 1924
DESCRIPTION:Dublin City Historian in Residence Cormac Moore will present a 5-part lecture series, in-person and online, about Ireland in 1924.\nTuesday 19 November at 6:30pm – The 1924 Free State Army Mutiny\nSo soon after the ending of the Irish Civil War, the Free State’s stability was seriously threatened again when officers of the National Army mutinied in March 1924 over the demobilization plans for the army, the lack of progress towards a Republic, and the dwindling influence of IRA veterans from the War of Independence in the Army.\nTuesday 26 November at 6:30pm – The 1924 Dissolution of Dublin Corporation\nThe fraught relationship between the Free State government and Dublin Corporation came to a head in early 1924, resulting in the dissolution of Dublin Corporation from 1924 to 1930, when local government was instead overseen by three-appointed commissioners.\nThursday 28 November at 6:30pm – The Tailteann Games\nThe biggest sporting and cultural event in the world in 1924 was not the Paris Olympics that year. It was the Tailteann Games in Ireland, organised by the Free State government to marry Ireland’s mythical and Celtic past with a new modern outlook to show Ireland was free and independent.\nPlease note: The final lecture will be on Thursday 28 November and not on a Tuesday.\nNo registration required.\nFor those joining online, Zoom link: Join In on Zoom\n
